Swiss Type CNC Precision Machining
Swiss-type turning is bounded by bar stock, so the design lever is specifying a bar diameter that is commercially available rather than a nominal one, and keeping length-to-diameter within what the guide bushing can support. Very small features on a long part are the expensive case, because they need a long, slender tool at the far end of the part.
This belongs in the quote discussion, not the first-article review, because the changes are usually trivial on the drawing and significant on the machine.
What tolerance applies?
±0.003 mm on CNC milling, ±0.002 mm on CNC turning; ±0.002 mm where precision grinding or wire EDM is used, fixed for each feature at the quote.
Which entity is responsible for the work?
Dongguan Zhuohang Ltd (Registration No. 91441900MA4UWT6X39, established 2005).
Which geometries justify swiss-type?
Long, slender parts: shafts, pins, spindles, bone screws, connector contacts, and watch components.
Fast cycle times and no second operation, but the bar stock must be held to tight diameter tolerance, which adds a small material premium.
Where does swiss-type stop paying?
Bar-fed only, so it is bounded by bar diameter and by the material that can be supplied as bar.
This boundary is stated deliberately. A supplier that recommends the highest-capability process for every part is optimising its own utilisation, not your cost, and the tell is a quote that never suggests simplifying the design.
How much of the floor is in this family?
Total machine count is not the question — the question is how many machines sit in the family that makes your part, because that is the queue your part waits in. The floor runs over a hundred machines: 50+ three-axis centres for prismatic work, 20+ four-axis, 20+ five-axis, 25+ turning and mill-turn centres, Swiss-type lathes for long slender parts, precision grinding and wire EDM for the tightest features.
Depth in the same family is what lets a part re-route rather than queue when a machine is pulled for service. That, not the headline machine, is what protects a delivery date.
What do the certificates actually cover?
Three certificates, each with a number you can check with the registrar:
| Standard | Certificate number | Scope note |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 9001:2015 | 116024/A/0001/UK/En | Quality management system |
| IATF 16949:2016 | 131941/A/0001/SM/En | Automotive QMS — excludes clause 8.3 product design |
| ISO 14001:2015 | 116024/B/0001/UK/En | Environmental management system |
The IATF 16949 certificate excludes clause 8.3 (product design). That is normal for a build-to-print manufacturer and it is stated here rather than left for an auditor to discover: we cut to the drawings you provide, it does not originate the design.
Swiss-type CNC precision — the slender-shaft discipline
Swiss-type turning is the process class where the bar stock feeds through a sliding headstock and the tool cuts just in front of a guide bushing, and wins on slender shafts (L/D above 3:1) where conventional turning deflects. On a 10:1 slender shaft, a conventional lathe deflects 0.05-0.10 mm under the tool; a Swiss-type (TSUGAMI B0206-III, STAR SR-32J Type N, Citizen Cincom A20-3F7) holds ±0.002 mm because the guide bushing supports the bar 0.5-1.0 mm from the cutting point. The tolerance payoff: ±0.002 mm on diameter, ±0.003 mm on length, surface Ra 0.4-0.8 µm, concentricity at 2-3 µm. The lead-time payoff: Swiss-type runs bar stock from a magazine at 30-90 seconds per piece for a 5-mm shaft (conventional lathe 3-6 minutes). On a 1,000-piece lot, Swiss-type cuts 50-100 hours. The sub-spindle back-working removes the second-end re-clamp. Where Swiss-type is wrong: on a shaft below 3:1; on a block; on a part above 32 mm diameter.

Swiss-type bar capacity and magazine loading
The Swiss-type machine's bar capacity is typically 32-38 mm diameter (TSUGAMI B0206-III, STAR SR-32J Type N, Citizen Cincom A20-3F7); above that a fixed-head lathe is the right machine. The magazine loading: the Swiss-type runs bar stock from a magazine that holds 3-6 meters of bar, so the operator loads once per 50-200 pieces (depending on the part length). The 24/7 unattended discipline: a Swiss-type with a magazine and a bar feeder runs 24/7 with one crew; the cycle time per piece is 30-90 seconds for a 5 mm shaft. On a 1,000-piece lot of slender shafts, the Swiss turning cuts 50-100 hours of cycle time vs the conventional lathe. The sub-spindle back-working: the part is cut on the main spindle, transferred to the sub-spindle for the second-end work, all in one setup — the concentricity between ends is held at 2-3 µm.

Swiss-type applications — the slender-shaft geometry list
Swiss-type routing on TSUGAMI B0206-III / B0205-III, STAR SR-32JII / SR-32J Type N, Citizen Cincom A20-3F7 is the right answer for slender shafts (L/D above 3:1) where conventional turning deflects. The applications: medical pins (orthopedic, dental), dental implants (the slender thread and the hex drive), watch components (pinions, staffs, winding stems), fuel injector nozzles (the slender needle and the spray orifice), aerospace fittings (fuel system pins, hydraulic valve spools), electronic pins (test probes, connector pins). The tolerance payoff: ±0.002 mm on diameter (the guide bushing supports the bar 0.5-1.0 mm from the cutting point, eliminating deflection); ±0.003 mm on length; surface Ra 0.4-0.8 µm; concentricity between turned features at 2-3 µm.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I audit the factory before placing an order?
Yes. On-site visits and video audits are welcome at No. 8, Shuibian Songyuan Road, Hengli Town, Dongguan, Guangdong, China 523470.
Do you sign NDAs before reviewing drawings?
Yes. Sign an NDA before files are exchanged; drawings are kept in the quoting system, not circulated by email.
When is swiss-type the right choice?
Long, slender parts: shafts, pins, spindles, bone screws, connector contacts, and watch components. Fast cycle times and no second operation, but the bar stock must be held to tight diameter tolerance, which adds a small material premium.
Is inspection documentation included in the quote?
It should be stated explicitly. A first-article report is a real document that has to be written, and whether it is a full dimensional report or a sample plan changes both the cost and what you receive.
What are the limits of swiss-type?
Bar-fed only, so it is bounded by bar diameter and by the material that can be supplied as bar. Knowing the boundary up front is what keeps a quote honest.
Are you a manufacturer or a trading company?
A manufacturer. The legal entity is Dongguan Zhuohang Ltd (Registration No. 91441900MA4UWT6X39), operating a 6,800 m² facility with a hundred-odd machines and 100+ staff in Dongguan. Factory visits are welcome.
What materials do you machine?
Aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, brass, copper, and Inconel for metals; PEEK and Delrin (POM) for plastics. Material certificates are verified on incoming stock.
When is swiss-type a defensible choice?
Long, slender parts: shafts, pins, spindles, bone screws, connector contacts, and watch components. Fast cycle times and no second operation, but the bar stock must be held to tight diameter tolerance, which adds a small material premium.
